Nancy, I so love what you wrote about this piece of art & the metaphor it symbolizes about the darkness & the light on so many levels. I too look at the changes in each room of our house during the different seasons as it reflects on our plants, artwork, etc. And now the light is beginning to shine again after four yrs of darkness in this country. It reminds me of one of the most important books ever written about what it is to be a true Christian, Jew & a truly good person to their core-The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom- whose family were imprisoned during Nazi Germany for hiding Jews. Corrie’s sister Betsie said-“there is no pit(darkness) so deep that He(God) is not deeper still”. She was to see “the light” of God’s grace thru the most bleakest darkness, grateful to be in the same barracks w/her sister, to have sneaked in a Bible, etc. She realized God’s answer was to be “grateful in all circumstances”. Can you imagine the strength it took to be grateful in such darkness?! We can’t know love without hate, we can’t know darkness without light. And as MLK said... it was the light that drove out the darkness! This sweet painting is a wonderful reminder of all the good that is possible!

Artist's Description

"In order for the light to shine so brightly, the darkness must be present." Francis Bacon

Early one morning, stumbling into the kitchen for a cup of coffee, I happen to notice this quiet corner of my living room sitting in darkness, just as the sun began shining its flashlight into the east facing window to create a wondrous light show on the walls. I had painted this same scene last spring, but wanted to catch the light brought on by the changing season. It's always interesting to see how different light appears at various times of the year.

Francis Bacon's quote above can apply to art, for without the darkness nothing has shape or definition. Darkness holds the light serving a backdrop, yet darkness and light are both necessary and have their own unique co-dependent roles to play; one is nothing without the contrast of its opposing truth. This is such an appropriate metaphor for life, especially when we find ourselves overwhelmed by darkness; if we can ju...

About Nancy Parsons

Nancy Parsons

"I am a graphic designer and contemporary impressionist oil painter of what I call, not-so-still life. Life never sits still; it is a living organism of energy and light spinning in perpetual motion. Energy extends beyond visual boundaries of shape to connect and dance with all that surrounds. My objective is a portrayal of the movement and sense of spirit. I find joy in simple ordinary things around me, and am fascinated by the play of light, shadow and reflections of color. I work in contemplative solitude to hear all that is being revealed by a subject. My paintings are painted wet-on-wet in bold loose brush stokes, laying down one delicious spot or note of color or tone of color, one next to another until they merge into a...
